Technology in the Economy
Subject
How technology initiatives have boosted the economy
Description
People are using technology to create new initiatives that support the economy such as online tax collection. Often, only 30% of taxes end up collected due to issues in the process. This lack of funds ultimately harms the country, especially rural villages, because there is not enough money to build roads and other important infrastructure. A new program called TownPay is a recently engineered project that allows citizens to pay their taxes online which eliminates extra steps. This new program is beneficial because the tax money can go directly to the villages.
A second newly-designed online initiative combines traditional Senegalese practices with the future. It is called “MaTontine.” In the past, women would put money in a pot, and at the end of the month, one woman would get all the money; this practice is called a tontine. MaTontine is now online, and it makes the process much safer. This program now allows women to build a credit score and take out small loans.
