Education in Senegal
Subject
Education System in Senegal, Funding Education, Technical Schools, Family Trade
Description
In Senegal, education is free for children ages six through twelve years, and it is required that children attend school for at least six years. However, most children do not attend school for that long, even though there are laws that require childhood education. Schools in Senegal are funded by the Global Partnership for Education. Because learning the family trade is an expectation for the youth population, many students drop out to support their families. Technical school is offered to children older than twelve, though they are not very popular. In school, teachings of the Quran are mainstream, cheating is rare, and classes are taught in French. Unfortunately though, most households do not speak French at home, so school is difficult because it is taught in the majority’s second language. Higher education universities are rare because few people continue their education for that long.
