Senegalese Food
Subject
Senegalese Food and Eating Customs
Description
While different ethnic groups in Senegal generally have their own cuisines, traditional Senegalese meals often consist of rice, corn, or millet covered in a sauce made with vegetables or meat. One popular dish, called yassa, is a dish of chicken and rice covered in a sauce made from onions and spices. In general, the traditions surrounding food in Senegal often revolve around family. More traditional families eat together every day, while less traditional families, particularly those in larger cities eat apart on busy weekdays but together on the more leisurely weekends. Additionally, while more modern Senegalese people might use utensils to eat, the traditional Senegalese way of eating consists of everyone sharing food from a communal bowl. People use their hands to scoop food from a bowl, and because of this method of eating, cleanliness is highly valued, and people are only allowed to use their right hands to get food from the communal bowl.
