Women in Senegal
Subject
The role of women in Senegal
Description
Women in Senegal's educational opportunities are limited. While the majority of Senegalese children attend elementary school, the drop rate for girls remains high to this day. Girls leave school for a wide array of reasons, ranging from poverty to pregnancy. The traditional African and Islamic customs in Senegal are another reason girls leave school. As a result of women's lack of education, the female literacy rate in Senegal is significantly lower than the male's.
Another result of the lack of education available to women in Senegal is that many job fields are dominated by men. For example, female politicians are rare in Senegal despite the fact that many women want to represent women in Africa through politics. Since the expectation for women is that they will not work, they are instead raised to be married. While married, women are under the control of their husbands, and while being raised, they are under the control of their father. Therefore, it is rare for a woman in Senegal to experience autonomy.
In Senegal, if a woman gets pregnant out of wedlock are ostracized. It also brings shame to their family. However, abortions in Senegal are largely illegal. Because of this, women often get secret abortions. 8-13% of maternal deaths in Senegal occur because of these secret abortions. However, if a women cannot get a secret abortion, they will often commit infanticide. 38% of detentions for women in Senegal are because they either had a back street abortion or they killed their infant.
